The Practice of Yoga Starts Now.

The Yoga Sutras are one of the first texts on yoga, attributed to Patanjali about 2,000 years ago. The Sutras begin with a simple yet profound declaration: “The practice of Yoga starts now.” This is not just an introduction to the text, or an invitation to the practice. It is a reminder that now is the only moment we have. Although the past may have an impact on us today, that moment is gone. The future can never be guaranteed, and so, it is only ever an idea. This moment, here and now, is the only moment that is real.
This thought alone can feel uncomfortable. Paying closer attention to the present moment often brings us face to face with feelings we tend to avoid. This is what keeps many of us busy, distracted, and in our heads.
Our bodies have innate wisdom for avoiding discomfort. If our hand is over a fire and burning, we instinctively pull it away. Yet unlike other animals, our highly developed prefrontal cortex often complicates things. Instead of simply reacting to discomfort, we interpret it, attach meaning to it, and replay stories from the past. This leads to further sensations of discomfort in the body, narrowing our perception of the world and trapping us in a negative feedback loop.
As this season warms and life speeds up, I invite you to allow yourself to move slowly. Take time to notice each moment and each person you encounter. Try to remember that this is the only moment that matters. If discomfort arises, rather than pushing it away, see what shifts when you offer it your attention and compassion. If you notice your mind wandering, as it is made to do, can you gently guide yourself back to this moment? To the sensations you feel, the sounds around you?
The practice of Yoga starts now.
